Monday, April 18, OTJ Architects took home an award at the 2016 IIDA Mid Atlantic Chapter’s Design Awards.  Out of the nine awards given (4 Merits, 4 Honors and the Pinnacle), American Gaming Association (AGA) won the Award of Honor in the under 10,000 square feet category.

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter (MAC) of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) is a professional organization dedicated to advancing the knowledge of interior design among professionals and expanding the awareness and appreciation of interior design among the general public.  The IIDA event honors the winners of the DESIGN AWARDS competition, recognizing the best interiors presented by Washington DC area design firms.

American Gaming Association Reception

The main goal in American Gaming Association’s relocation was to modernize their office to provide a leading-edge view of the gaming industry.  They needed a space that could serve as both entertainment and workspace with a modern aesthetic. A challenge the team faced was how to take the design aesthetic of Las Vegas and apply it to a place where staff can be productive and clients enjoy visiting.

The design incorporates gaming industry elements as if metaphorically entering a game. The datum of the entertainment area and reception radiates outward and gradually filters to the back of house workspaces.

5 American Gaming Association _ Meeting Area

Two elements guide the user through the space; the digital ticker tape and the vertical and horizontal surfaces. The two elements provide constant reference back to the entertainment areas of the office organization. Flexible conference rooms that open to entertainment areas create the ideal hosting environment.

The wood ceiling from reception through the pantry draws one through the space, mimicking the configuration of the datum of the roulette table and the wedged slots. The digital ticker tape, complete with betting lines, odds and scores that are constantly updated –runs throughout the office. It establishes movement and flow all the way down the main circulation corridor.

4 American Gaming Association _ Pantry

Slot machines serve as an interactive display in the pantry while artwork and wall graphics all highlight the gaming industry. An open meeting area adjacent to the workstations features a poker table allowing for a small meeting to take place – or a game of poker.
