American Legacy Foundation
Washington DC

The American Legacy Foundation is dedicated to building a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit. As a national, independent public health foundation, this organization develops national programs that address the health effects of tobacco use. Our client came to us with a passion for creating a “healthy” work environment that would be encouraged by architecture. Having purchased the building, they were not only looking at an entire building modernization, but were also focused on a design for the long-term. In order to meet these criteria, we developed a plan that was efficient in LEED design while creating a campus-like environment that would take them into the future. Approaching the building, the landscaping provides an immediate sense of welcome where we used a brick pattern that actually penetrates into the lobby space. The reception area is open and alive with various textures, color and materials all working together to include a combination of cork and carpet that are used to show the circulation paths into the common areas. Bright, warm colors and finishes continue throughout the space adding elements that reflect the client’s tastes, branding and mission. The use of inviting, well-designed stairs throughout the building leads and encourages walking through the space. Bringing natural light in to all interior spaces through the use of full height glass further enhances this flow allowing the outside in, emphasizing the positive working environment. Pendant light fixtures were selected in order to spread an even, indirect light across the ceiling though mounted only 6” from the ceiling itself. Displayed throughout the building are marketing outreach campaign pieces that tell the client’s history and future direction. Of special note is the “green” roof top deck and patio, another LEED component to the design. Employees are encouraged to enjoy the outdoors as well as a sense of camaraderie while not having to leave the building. From the entrance to the building to its rooftop, the client’s vision and philosophy is reflected within the space.
