Department
of State
US Diplomacy Center
The
Department of State’s US Diplomacy Center needed a versatile space
from which to work. For example, a full presentation space was created
on three of the four walls of the main conference room to allow for team
design concepts of the new DOS Museum to be displayed. In the conference
room, a projection screen was added, as well as additional lighting to
highlight the wall displays. Open space was needed in this design, a
requirement which afforded the client an opportunity for a true teamwork
environment while still allowing privacy between the staff’s individual
workstations. The US Diplomacy Center’s everyday activities involve
a constant back-and-forth between different indivduals and groups, which
made the creation of a versatile design solution absolutely imperative
to the success of this project. The limitations of space made it necessary
to draw into sunlight into the group areas - this additional natural
lighting was added by maximizing the window-line’s potential throughout
the space. The millwork was custom made to ensure an effective use of
space. These built-in workstations have shared upper cabinetry, allowing
for more openness throughout the hallways as well. The carpet and finishes
selected for this space are warm and within budget, and the result is
both simple and elegant. OTJ was able to spend the tenant allowance where
it was needed, while effectively value-engineering any unnecessary design
elements to bring the project to its successful conclusion.
