Department
of State
Passport Services
The
use of mahogany throughout the space creates warmth, including the use
of oversized wood base trim and framing around the etched glass and the
conference room table. The etched glass allows natural light and openness,
while maintaining privacy. In order to meet the DOS requirement to emphasis
the history of passport services, a special display case is featured
in the design of the conference room. Special attention was given to
feature a traditional feel when entering the lobby. Included in this
design element was refinishing the hardwood floors, selecting
furniture that matches the wood framing and floors, and highlighting the etched
glass. The receptionist desk offers a warm welcome when visitors enter the lobby
area. This office was designed to continue to match the warm, classic design
seen in the lobby and hallway. Emphasis was placed on selecting millwork, executive
desks,
chairs and tables that would be set up to allow a clear view of the cityscape.
Special attention was needed to display their pictures throughout the
hallways. A special challenge was met when obtrusive multiple columns
were visually improved
by special paint selection and the addition of wall mounted light fixtures. Berber
carpeting was added for durability and to lighten the areas. Extra thick wood
mounted base framing was added to improve the natural lines.
