Department
of State
Overseas Citizens Services
The
Department of State’s Overseas Citizens Services agency was looking
for a historical elegance in its lobby design. Thus, OTJ’s services
included refinishing the floor, upgrading to a lighted coffered ceiling
to give off a more open feel, and additional lighting to highlight the
etched glass panelling around the space. The design also emphasized the
DOS logo, prominently displayed when first entering the agency’s
headquarters. This was also necessary in maintaining a historical credibility
and ambience.
Special furniture was carefully selected in this oversized conference room to
give the feeling of warmth when having company wide meetings that may involve
over twenty people at a time. Overall design features in this room included highlighting
the ceiling’s unique recessed structure. Additional lighting was added
to meet the challenge of the client’s desire for it to seem like “natural” light.
This was further emphasized using soft incandescant fixtures that brought out
the warmth of the wall colors and wood floors. The ceiling increases the centrality
of the space among the offices, and adds a touch of elegance to the room that
would be hard to achieve otherwise.
